NEW BOOK ON CHARLES BIEDERMAN

Strongly advised to anyone who is interested in the history Modernism this book deals with the eventful life and struggle through the length of the 20th century of a highly idiosyncratic artist and theorist whose works are in many important museum collections, and whose writings and "Structurist" works have influenced and inspired various generations of artists (esp. in Canada, UK, the Netherlands, Poland). Biederman (1906-2004) was a fast emerging artist in the early 1930's New York, destroyed all his important contacts for his stubbornly preferred artistic freedom, urged by a profound desire to create something entirely new, lived in Paris in the late 1930's, synthesizing Léger, Mondrian, Russian Constructivists in an exceptional idiosyncratic style building on a vision on nature similar to but deeper than Cézanne. Living in self-inflicted reclusion in Minnesota, the days of his public acknowledgement came in the late 1960's.

Fré Ilgen became a close friend of Biederman from about 1987- the early 1990's, exchanging letters and invited him in 1988 and 1990 for lectures in various countries and museums in Europe. In this new volume of 300 pages, excellently written by Susan C.Larsen (based on her own and Neil Juhl Larsen's research), Fré Ilgen's commitment to make Biederman known to a wider audience in the late 1980's and early 1990's is mentioned. The top picture shows Ilgen's "Seven Steps To Heaven", installed at Sindoh, Asan, Korea. The bottom picture shows Vilem Flusser, Fré Ilgen, Charles Biederman, Toine Horvers at the 3rd PRO Conference, organized by Fré and Jacqueline Ilgen at the World Trade Center in Rotterdam 1989.

In 1990 Fré Ilgen video-taped several hours interviewing Charles Biederman in his studio, about and showing the development of his artworks, about his interests in science and about his life, and made these tapes available to art historians and to the Frederick Weisman Museum in Minneapolis who have the Estate of Biederman. In 2004 Ilgen published "ART?, NoThing! - analogies between art, science and philosophy" including a chapter on the intense correspondence between Biederman and scientist David Bohm.
